Hoi An, historically known as Faifoo to the Europeans, is a little town situated in the middle of Vietnam and was the largest harbor town and most important port for the Chinese and Japanese in SE Asia. Da Nang took over as the major port city after the fall of the Nguyễn dynasty but there are still remnants of Hoi An's past.
The oldest reminder of Hoi An's legacy is My Son, a Hindu temple complex during Champa empire. Bricks were used to build the temples without the aid of mortar. How you ask? Well, no one knows. Most of these buildings are now piles of bricks due to US bombing and nature reclaiming it.
The old city is perfectly situated near the river and it comes alive at night. Numerous silk lanterns light up the streets, the river is aglow with floating candles, and people are taking wedding photos because everywhere you look it looks like a postcard.
We decided to stay a little outside of the city and in a homestay in a vegetable village. Really, we decided to stay there because they had a dog. Lucky for us, we were out of the noisy area, the most hospitable hosts, and only 2km away from the beach.
Beach day!! This is the first real beach day we've had on our trip.
