Food for Thought (in Chile)

Pisco - Chile and Peru have a long lasting argument on the origin of grape brandy.

Mote con huesillo - wheat on the bottom and a peach on top. Our guide says this is the national non-alcoholic drink of Chile.

Completo - essentially a hotdog with lots of mayo and guacamole. This is the one that made us sick in April.

Lomito - pork tenderloin sandwich topped with any fixings you want and eaten with a fork and knife.  No worries, Priscilla didn't have any.

Pastel de Choclo - much like a shepherd's pie except the mashed potatoes is corn.  Baked and served in a clay pot.

Fish - don't really remember what type this was besides fried. Being on the coast, Chile has lots of fish.

Cazuela - beef soup in a clay pot. Usually contains a chunk of meat, a chunk of potato, and a chunk of pumpkin.

Paila marina - seafood soup. Sometimes extremely salty, like they dumped a couple of cups of ocean into the dish.

Caldillo de congrio - congor eel soup. So famous that a Nobel Prize winning Chilean poet wrote an ode to it.  He also wrote an ode to a lemon.

Sam's blueberry and pineapple cobbler - look for this when she opens up her own bakery. All natural sugar and all delicious.
